Winners announced in A&DS and RIAS Scottish Student Awards for Architecture 2016

Daniel Cardno’s project proposing transition from skills associated with the oil and gas industry towards an economy concentrated on maritime industry and tourism won the RIAS Rowand Anderson Silver Medal, as Maelys Garreau picked up the A&DS Award for best 3rd year student with her proposed design for a “catch-up” institution for previously hospitalized children using outdoor play.

Their projects were just some of the high quality student projects awarded at the annual Architecture and Design Scotland (A&DS) and the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) Scottish Student Awards for Architecture.

The winners were announced on Thursday 14th of July at a ceremony held at the Saunders Centre, Glasgow Academy, a new building recently celebrated at the RIAS Awards for architecture.

The awards – now in their 14th year – recognise the talent of student architects and are awarded in a number of categories. Projects submitted for the awards included proposals ranging from designing for dementia, libraries, artists hubs and urban breadmaking, through to international proposals for an outdoor room in Norway, a self sustaining ecosystem in Berlin and a road to re-connect the Red Hook neighbourhood in Brooklyn. The 2016 winners will also join the current Best of the Best exhibition which is touring across Scotland as part of Architecture and Design Scotland’s Say Hello to Architecture programme and the Festival of Architecture.

The award ceremony followed the Andy MacMillan lecture in honour of the late Professor Andy MacMillan (1928-2014) celebrating his legacy. The lecture was delivered by this year’s guest judge Christophe Egret, of Studio Egret West. Christophe is an Anglo-French architect, brought up in Paris. In his early career he worked for a number of well-known practices, including Alsop and Stormery. Studio Egret West, founded in 2004, is an award-winning international practice and notable projects include their first building within the Nottingham Science Park masterplan; Park Hill, Sheffield, one of the iconic housing projects of the 60‘s and the largest listed building in the UK; Clapham Library Building; Stratford Shoal and Meridien Square at the entrance to the Olympic site and the Fold, Sidcup.

Following the awards ceremony the winning and shortlisted students’ work will be on display in The Lighthouse, offering a rare opportunity for the public and profession to see the best work of students from all of Scotland’s Schools of Architecture together in one space.

Speaking about the Awards, A&DS Chair Karen Anderson said “In this year of Innovation, Architecture and Design and at the height of the Festival of Architecture, A&DS is delighted to continue to collaborate with RIAS to highlight the high quality of work from the best of Scotland’s architecture students. A&DS aims to support emerging practitioners and these awards, and the supporting exhibition, allow the profession and public to see the high standard emerging from our schools of architecture.”

RIAS Past President Iain Connelly commented “Our annual student awards mark the extraordinarily high quality of architectural education in Scotland. Students from throughout the world come here because of the excellent training that is on offer. Scotland’s five schools of architecture are major contributors to the evolution of architecture across the planet.”

Winning Project: Marine Research Centre, Eidsvåg, Norway (pictured as main image)

The Marine Research Centre is located in a proposed sustainable settlement within the Eidsvåg bay, Norway. The proposal focuses on the transition of developed skills associated with the oil and gas industry and their application towards creating a healthier economy concentrated on maritime industry and tourism.
Judges’ Citation: “Consistent drawings, well referenced with care and technical provision to create a careful and well resolved scheme. The references are appropriate and add to the sheer quality of this convincing winner.”


Architecture and Design Scotland Award for Best 3rd Year Student
Winning Project: The Catch-Up Institution, Forres, Scotland

A fantastical Journey into the landscape

‘Catch-up’ is an institution for previously hospitalized children to catch-up on their creative development that they might have missed in the time spent within an enclosed environment. Accordingly, the institution creates a threshold to re-enter society through outdoor play. Thus the open and remote environment allows for their freedom of creative expression through in movement and play, which allows for the use of senses in the way a child faces challenges and adapts to them.

Judges’ Citation: “A sophisticated approach to creating architecture for children, immersively approaching the building “through the eyes of a child”. A lexicon of original forms adds delight and poetry.”

Architecture and Design Scotland Urban Design Award
Winning Project: The Paphos Gate Redux, Nicosia, Cyprus

The cloven city of Nicosia, Cyprus. A post-war urban condition of two divided nations, a bufferzone of no-mans land marking a border through its historic centre. The Paphos Gate Redux proposes to re-activate the city’s dormant western gate, currently held within the Buffer-zone, utilising it as a new threshold between nations.

Judges’ Citation: “A sophisticated and clearly thought through set of drawings, demonstrative of careful and painstaking analysis. The evolution of ideas towards providing a viable long-term solution is elegantly expounded within a set of drawings and models of real verve, a sense of pleasure and an exacting focus on the detail.”

Architecture and Design Scotland Sustainable Design Award
Winning Project: The Copiapó Brine Network
Ryan Canning and Gabriela Mill – University of Strathclyde

The Copiapó Brine Network links the city to the sea through an aqueduct and recreational route, with three architectural interventions. Each intervention generates new opportunities for local industry and culture, whilst serving as a functional node for the water purification process

Judges’ Citation: “The re-use of existing urban landscape is one of the greatest challenges to create the sustainable city of the future. This scheme addresses this issue with clarity and a very direct approach which uses the carving of a new route through the industrial landscape as a mechanism to catalyse new durable solutions.”

Judges’ Citation: “A superbly seductive set of drawings which are immersed in creating a vision of a future which is seen through a child’s eyes with great charm and no hint of childishness. This is a sophisticated collection of very beautiful images which generate convincing architecture.”

Jointly held by A&DS and RIAS the annual student awards recognises academic projects from the five Scottish Schools of Architecture. Awarded are the RIAS Rowand Anderson Silver Medal, the A&DS award for best 3rd year Student, the A&DS Urban Design Award, the A&DS Sustainable Design Award and the RIAS Andy Macmillan Drawing Award. This year’s A&DS and RIAS Scottish Student Awards for Architecture Exhibition will be on show in The Lighthouse, Glasgow from 15 July – 25 September, 2016.
