A day for children and families to make, build, play and imagine the city together. Children don’t always communicate their experiences of place most powerfully through words. Making and play can reveal ideas, relationships and observations about the city that conventional consultation can miss.
So, for our Make day, we’re putting the city in their hands. Children are invited to get creative, build their ideas and imagine the places they would love to grow up in - exploring what their streets, neighbourhoods, play spaces and wider city could become.
Book your tickets on Eventbrite here.
Event | Thur 15 October 2026 | 15:00 - 17:00 | Admission Free
As children grow into adolescence, the spaces designed specifically for them begin to disappear. Playgrounds are left behind and public space becomes increasingly important, a place to meet friends, gain independence and develop a sense of belonging.
But who are these spaces really designed for? Who feels welcome in them, and who gets pushed to the edges?
Together with Imogen Clark from Make Space for Girls and Anna Gaffney of A Place in Childhood, we explore what young people need from their city as they grow, with a particular focus on the experiences of teenage girls and the inequalities that can shape their access to public space

The Mass Timber Academy presents The Mass Timber Revolution, its new exhibition highlighting the virtues of engineered solid laminate (mass) timber products and systems in the construction of a low-carbon, energy-efficient, and healthier built environment for the next three quarters of the 21st century.
The exhibition invites you to understand more about mass timber and why it is important that we now think seriously about what we build and why.
The world is changing around us, and many old certainties may no longer apply in the future. This is certainly true when we consider global warming and the impact this is having on the increasingly unusual ways existing buildings perform. Even after a quarter century of use in the UK, Mass Timber is still not well known here by much of the country’s building industry or by the wider public. Yet internationally, this is one of the fastest-growing areas of design and construction and one that future design professionals trying and graduating here need to become familiar with.
Event | Wed 21 October | 15:15 - 16:00
Featuring Simon Corbey, Executive Director, ASBP
The Association of Sustainable Building Products’ (ASBP) mission is: “To lead the transformation to a healthy low carbon built environment by championing the understanding and use of demonstrably sustainable building products.” The organisation has led on a number of the major issues affecting the design, specification and installation of mass timber products and systems, such as the highly regarded Mass Timber Insurance Playbook.
A Chartered Surveyor with a Master's in Architecture, Simon’s role with the ASBP concentrates on its seminars and learning events, e.g. its recent webinar, Biogenic Carbon – Recognising, measuring and rewarding natural carbon storage and its forthcoming one-day event, Building Resilience Through Reuse. Simon will outline the ASBP’s forthcoming guidance on managing water and moisture risk throughout the lifecycle of mass timber buildings.
This event will take place online.
Event | Fri 23 October | 10:00-12:00
Featuring Daniel Vazquez, Design Engineer, Mass Timber Structures Ltd
Daniel is a Building Engineer with a background in architectural technology, timber engineering and mass timber construction. He specialises in the design, coordination and delivery of mass timber structures, combining technical design and engineering with the practical delivery of projects on site.
Having worked across a wide range of projects throughout the UK, including bespoke housing, office buildings, leisure centres and educational buildings, Daniel’s experience of the full project process, from early design development and coordination through to temporary works, lifting operations and the installation of CLT and Glulam structures.
If you want to know how mass timber structures actually get built, you can't afford to miss the nuts, bolts and more in this talk!
This event will take place live at the exhibition.
Event | Mon 26 October | 16:00 - 17:30
Featuring Peter Fisher, Director, Bennetts Associates
Timber Square consists of two buildings - a former printworks that has been extended upwards by six storeys and a new-build 15-storey building, the largest commercial building in the UK to feature CLT floor slabs. The project brief called for a human-centric, health-focused design with low embodied carbon and operational carbon, strong connections and a porous urban realm, all of which led to the use of CLT.
Peter Fisher, the director at Bennetts Associates responsible for Timber Square, combines leadership and technical expertise with a belief in the value and beauty of restrained, resourceful design. He has an unusual background, having studied both architecture and environmental design. The journey into timber traces the practice’s use of timber over many years in award-winning projects.
This event will take place live at the exhibition.

Event | Wed 28 October | 15:30-16:30
Featuring John Spittle
In recent years, Wiehag has delivered some of the largest and most exciting mass timber projects to be seen in the UK and around the world. The company combine structural innovation with high-precision manufacture and installation of mass timber components.
Many of the projects are regarded as icons of advanced 21st century timber engineering, the latest being the 39 storey Atlassian Tower in Sydney. Closer to home, the Crossrail Station at London’s Canary Wharf and the Macallan Distillery on Speyside demonstrate the extraordinary range of Wiehag’s expertise.
John Spittle has represented the company in the UK and Ireland for the past 14 years and has extensive experience in all forms of timber engineering. He has been involved in setting up & running large-scale national contracts, from first idea to completed projects!

Learning to See More: a participatory workshop from Uniform November's Frazer Macdonald Hay on place, memory and the things we overlook
How much do we really see of the places in which our lives unfold?
Buildings and places shape our lives in ways we don't always recognise. Some are celebrated for their architecture and history, while others are so familiar that we barely notice them. Yet all can carry memories, stories and meanings that extend far beyond their physical appearance.
Join writer, researcher and peacebuilding consultant Frazer Macdonald Hay for an engaging, two-hour workshop exploring how we see, understand and experience the places around us. Drawing upon an unconventional career spanning architecture, emergency services, education and international peacebuilding, Frazer will share stories and experiences from Scotland and around the world, inviting participants to consider familiar environments through different lenses.
Through storytelling, creative postcard exercises and conversation, we'll explore how places acquire significance, how their meanings change over time, and how we might imagine new futures for the buildings and environments we inherit. From everyday landmarks to extraordinary architecture, Learning to See More is an invitation to rediscover the places that shape our lives and the possibilities they hold.
Open to everyone. No specialist knowledge or drawing ability required – just curiosity.

The conversation then moves to a live call, where additional speaker, Gerry King will respond with his personal experience, questioning and extending what has been said. Audience members are invited to text in their questions, which will be put to the call in real time.
