Design-led pilot to explore new approaches to housing delivery

Architecture and Design Scotland has launched a pilot project with East Ayrshire Council to explore how design can help unlock housing opportunities on a complex brownfield site in a town centre setting.

Working with East Ayrshire Council, BE-ST and members of the A&DS expert design panel, the pilot will develop and test a new methodology that combines design leadership, data and innovation to understand site potential and inform housing delivery.

The project forms part of Architecture and Design Scotland's response to Scotland's housing emergency. While increasing housing supply remains a national priority, there is also a need to ensure that housing ambitions are translated into homes, neighbourhoods and places that deliver lasting social, economic and environmental value.

Using a live town centre site as a proof of concept, the pilot will explore how early design intervention can help identify opportunities, address constraints and shape development proposals that respond to local context, housing needs and support positive place outcomes.

The findings will provide evidence on how a design-led approach can help unlock housing opportunities and inform future delivery models across Scotland.
