Developing the architectural sector in Scotland
Working to unlock growth, build capacity and create opportunities
Developing the architectural sector in Scotland is a key component of our work, whilst being interwoven throughout all aspects of what we do.
Seeking to support the growing economic and cultural contribution of architecture in Scotland, we will run an ambitious programme tackling a range of topics – from helping clients understand the value of design, to seeking the removal of systemic barriers to growth, exploring critical issues such as AI in design practice and enhancing the sector viability.
Through collaboration with key partners, advocacy for the power of design and practical action, we aim to create the conditions for a more resilient architectural sector — one that delivers high-quality places and better public value.
We will continue to update this webpage with news, views and events.
Setting out our plan
In response to engagement with the architecture and design sectors in Scotland, we are setting out ways in which we will unlock growth, build capacity and create opportunity.
More on each of our planned areas of work is set out below.
Removing barriers to growth
We will support design-led approaches in procurement, capital programmes and planning, so clients can make better decisions and practices can compete, innovate and grow.
Activities include;
- establishment of a Design Procurement Improvement Working Group
- development of evidence-based recommendations working in collaboration with Scottish Government and Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS)
- targeted engagement with the Scottish Government Planning Hub and Heads of Planning Scotland to strengthen design capability within local authorities
- delivery of events to support the architectural sector
- showcasing procurement case studies and whole-life costing approaches
Building capacity
Our aim is to strengthen skills, leadership and innovation to support sustainable practice, better public investment outcomes, housing and climate adaptation and digital innovation.
Activities include;
- targeted engagement with design practices
- coordinated participation in key events to support the architecture sector in Scotland, including the use of A&DS:SpACE at the Edinburgh Futures Institute (EFI)
- promotion of events and training, covering issues such as AI, digital integration, and climate conscious design
- production of concise, practice-focused “How To” guidance for practitioners
