Caroline Parkinson on being a Board Member of A&DS
Caroline Parkinson has spent more than three decades working across the creative industries sector and, since 2020, has served as the Sector Engagement Lead for the Creative Industries at the Edinburgh Futures Institute. With a career shaped by collaboration, sector leadership, and sector development, Caroline brings a broad perspective to her role as a Board Member with Architecture and Design Scotland (A&DS).
In this article, she reflects on her experience as a board member, the organisation’s evolving direction, and her advice for those joining the Board in the future.
What has being an A&DS board member meant to you, personally and professionally?
“I have enjoyed being on the Board of A&DS and bringing what I can from my background and skills to support the organisation’s aims, I found this brings a great deal of personal satisfaction. Professionally speaking, experiencing being a Board Member leads to an appreciation of the difference between the Board’s function and that of the Executive, which has broadened my organisational understanding.”
A new direction
A&DS is entering a fresh phase of deeper engagement with the architectural community — a direction that aligns closely with Caroline’s extensive experience in sector development. As the built environment faces new social, economic, and environmental pressures, this shift positions A&DS to play an even stronger role in supporting practitioners and enabling innovation.
What excites you most about A&DS’ new direction?
“Sector development is something I have had past experience of in my career, and I am excited about this new phase of deeper engagement with the architectural community, and what A&DS can do for the sector to help it flourish,” Caroline says.
Strong boards thrive on diversity of experience, thoughtful challenge, and constructive support. As A&DS moves into this new chapter, new board members will play a key role in guiding strategic direction and championing the organisation’s impact.
How could a new board member help deliver on our new approach?
“I would suggest any new board member focusses on what the organisation has aimed to do to help develop the architecture sector and draw on their knowledge and experience to support the Executive and the A&DS team in achieving those aims. And be themselves!”
Joining the A&DS Board
Caroline’s experience highlights the value of collaborative leadership and the importance of understanding both the strategic and human dimensions of board work. Her reflections are a reminder of how much Scotland’s creative and architectural sectors benefit from committed individuals who bring experience, curiosity, and authenticity to the table.
