Eirini Atmatzidou 

Design Officer

Eirini qualified as an Architect Engineer in Greece, where she worked as an architect and stage designer before moving to the UK. She holds an MSc in Material Practice from the University of Edinburgh (ESALA), where she is currently tutoring in postgraduate and undergraduate courses. With extensive experience of materials and fabrication processes, she now works on a wide range of projects at A&DS, including the Materials Library and the Scotland+Venice project.


Morag Bain

Morag Bain

Principal Design Officer

Mora Bain graduated in art and architecture.  Following a period in theatre set design she has spent her career promoting Architecture and Design through exhibitions and articles.  She has also tutored at a University level. Her role at A&DS covers curation of the Scottish contribution to the Venice Biennale and creative direction of our web-based publications.


Gillian Black

Principal Urban Designer

Gillian is a planner and urban designer with extensive experience across housing regeneration, retail, master-planning, commercial and infrastructure developments. She contributes across our Design Advice work and leads for us on Making Places. Gillian is part of the Expert Network for Global Designing Cities Initiative (GDCI).


Emelie Borg

Design Officer

Emelie qualified as an Architect in Sweden and has worked in the private, NGO and public sectors. She supports the Chief Executive in ensuring our work is effectively aligned to established and emerging policy. Emelie is also involved in preparing consultation responses, briefing Chair & Board and supporting our corporate communications.


Johnny Cadell

Johnny Cadell

Principal Architect

Johnny is an Architect and has over 30 years’ experience in senior design and management roles working across the UK in the public and private sectors. He has specialist skills in housing masterplans, stakeholder engagement, urban design and street design.  He currently leads our work on the Place Standard and Design Advice for Housing with a focus on the influence of communities on placemaking design.


Heather Chapple

Heather Chapple

Director of Design

Heather is an Architect with 30 years’ experience in the private, public and third sectors with an emphasis on housing, public buildings and inclusive design.  She has expertise and interest in stakeholder engagement in design processes, qualitative briefing and the strategic and policy context effecting development. As part of the Management Team Heather oversees our design advice, sustainability and community engagement work.


Heather Claridge

Principal Design Officer

Heather is a chartered planner, urban designer and geographer (currently on secondment from Glasgow City Council). She has over a decade of public sector experience of developing urban regeneration and planning initiatives. In A&DS, Heather leads on a new project focused on whole place planning for decarbonisation and a changing climate.

 


Hannah Douglas

Senior Design Officer

Hannah is a history and sociology graduate who has wide experience of working across the public, private and third sectors in a range of roles. She currently works within our schools projects leading workshops with students and co-ordinating our input to the annual Education Buildings Scotland Conference.


Anja Ekelof

Anja Ekelof

Communications Manager

Anja trained as a journalist and has over 20 years’ experience in a variety of senior communications roles across the public, private and third sectors. She leads our communications work which covers press & media, public affairs, marketing and PR and provides direct support to the Board and Chief Executive.


David Fletcher

Senior Architect

David is an Architect with experience across both public and private sectors in Education, Housing and Healthcare projects.  His experience in practice is supplemented by tutoring part-time within the Department of Architecture at the University of Strathclyde. David’s work at A&DS is principally related to our schools projects and he can regularly be found running workshops with teachers and students in various parts of Scotland.


 

Kate Givan

Senior Planner

Kate is a planning graduate who is working towards full membership of the RTPI. She currently works on a range of projects and leads for us on LAUDF, Policy Consultation and Key Agencies Group. She is also a qualified Project Manager and helped develop our in-house project/workflow system.


Laura Hainey

Laura Hainey

Senior Architect

Laura is an Architect who specialises in sustainable design and materials, and has an interest in the circular economy and offsite construction. Laura’s experience lies in housing where she worked on projects across the UK, with additional volunteering work in India designing an earth brick school. Laura leads on the Materials Library and supports our work in housing.


Kate Hendry

Kate Hendry

Principal Design Officer

Kate studied architecture and after some time in practice spent 5 years as Programme Manager of the Scottish Government’s Sustainability in Architecture Programme (Sust.) before joining A&DS.  She has expertise in sustainable design and is an experienced project manager. Currently, Kate’s focus is leading our Case Studies work and providing project management support to our Materials Library and Housing projects.


Andrea Hepburn

Corporate Services Executive Assistant

Andrea is PA to the Chief Executive and a member of our corporate team with previous administration experience in both the commercial and residential property sectors. She is responsible for supporting the Chair and Chief Executive, providing secretariat support to the Board and Committees and leads on HR administration for the organisation.


Danny Hunter

Principal Architect

Danny is an Architect with over 15 years’ experience in professional practice whose experience spans commercial, residential, educational and public projects. At A&DS, he is primarily involved in design advice for health, schools and housing. He is passionate about good design and the positive impact that this can have on people’s lives.


Maureen Jobbins

Corporate Services Executive Assistant

Maureen is a member of our corporate team and leads on providing front of house services. In addition, she leads on administration of budgets, purchasing, contracts and correspondence as well as supporting our Board.


Alex Laurenson

Interior Designer

Alex is qualified in both sound engineering and interior design with 10 years’ experience working in the third sector as an arts educator. His work at A&DS covers support for the Materials Library, Test of Change, designing our publications and coordinating our internal CPD programme.

Director of Operations

Lynne is a chartered accountant with 30 years’ experience across the private and public sectors. She is currently responsible for overseeing the full range of corporate functions within A&DS and provides advice to the Board and Chief Executive on finance, HR, risk and governance issues.


Val MacBeath

Corporate Services Executive Assistant

Val is a member of our corporate team and provides support to the Board, Chief Executive and to a range of projects. She provides the Secretariat function to our Audit Committee.  She has worked in private, public and third sector organisations and leads on project administration.


Steven Malone

Steve Malone

Principal Architect

Steve is an Architect who works across the organisation providing advice to clients, design teams and local authorities on projects at design development stage including housing, health, masterplans and infrastructure. He is currently the lead for us on our Design Advice to Public Sector Clients, Public Sector Client Forum and Town Centre Living projects and has a particular interest in sustainable design.


Daniel McKendry

Principal Landscape Architect

Danny is a Chartered Landscape Architect and Geographer with extensive regeneration, economic development and transport experience, working with communities in the public and private sectors. He works across a range of projects at A&DS and leads for us on support for Rural Tourist Infrastructure and Pre-Design Advice for Housing.


Tim Moss

Design Officer

Tim is a planning graduate working towards chartership of the RTPI. His experience includes community engagement volunteering, planning policy at local government level and communications work in the third sector. He currently works on a range of projects with A&DS.


Gerard O’Brien

Senior Design Officer

Gerard has a degree in natural science and post graduate degree in landscape architecture. He worked for 15 years in private and public practice on a wide range of landscape projects before becoming a college lecturer. Gerard joined A&DS as part of the decarbonisation and place making team.


Sue Reynolds

Corporate Services Manager

Sue is a qualified HR Manager and has over 30 years’ experience in a range of administrative and managerial roles across the public and private sector. She is responsible for day to day operation of the organisation and for leading our corporate team.


Karen Ridgewell

Senior Design Officer

Karen has worked with the Built Environment for over 15 years as an Architect, Contractor Sustainability Manager and Adaptation Planning professional.  At A&DS, her focus is the Place Planning for Decarbonisation project, working with Local Authorities through the planning system to design-in carbon reduction and climate adaptation into spatial plans and development strategies and briefs.


Lesley Riddell Robertson

Lesley Riddell Robertson

Principal Designer

Lesley is a designer and educator with extensive experience working within the design, architecture and cultural sector. She is a trained facilitator with specific interest in developing community engagement and capacity building in relation to placemaking.  Her main focus at A&DS is in community empowerment, evaluation, skills development and learning resources.
