Scotland + Venice 2016: Prospect North

Add to Scrapbook

Scotland’s contribution to the 15th International Architecture Exhibition of la Biennale di Venezia was Prospect North – an immersive exhibition curated by Lateral North, Dualchas Architects and Soluis, co-curated by Architecture and Design Scotland and supported by the Scotland + Venice partnership – Scottish Government, Architecture and Design Scotland, Creative Scotland and British Council Scotland.

Prospect North explores Scotland and its relationship alongside its northern neighbours with a focus on people and place. This micro to macro approach delivers a series of innovative mapping strategies, individual narratives, portraits and evocative imagery highlighting Scotland’s place and identity within an economically emerging northern region.

Prospect North explores the relationship between people, culture, places, industries and economies and how ‘peripheral’ communities from the Northern Isles of Orkney to the industrial heartland of the central belt of Scotland are re-energising through grassroots actions and local endeavours. Their unique situations and background are revealed through their stories from the past, present and future. The videos featured in the exhibition have been gathered in a vimeo channel available here.

The initial exhibition and events ran from 26 May until 25 June at Ludoteca Santa Maria Ausiliatrice in Venice, and  returned to Scotland for a nationwide tour as part of Scotland’s Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design and the Festival of Architecture 2016. The Prospect North exhibition was the main focus of the Oban Festival of Architecture in August, it will be on show at the Arctic Circle Assembly in Reykjavik in October, before returning for a run in The Lighthouse in October and finishing up in Dundee in November.
