Andy MacMillan Memorial Lecture 2020 – Jude Barber, Collective Architecture

The 2020 Andy MacMillan Memorial Lecture and the 19th A&DS and RIAS Scottish Student Awards shortlist announcement was held on 24th of September 2020. The event was exclusively online and exhibited the outstanding talents of students at five Scottish schools of architecture. As ever, the awards mark the quality of Scottish architectural education.

About Jude Barber, Collective Architecture

Jude Barber FRIAS RIBA of Collective Architecture will present the 2020 Andy MacMillan Memorial Lecture.

Jude Barber is an architect and director at Collective Architecture. The studio is 100% owned and controlled by employees, and works on principles of creative freedom, equity and sustainability. Together, the team has delivered several key residential, civic and cultural projects around the UK. These include Glasgow Women’s Library, Anderston Regeneration, Paisley Secret Collection. The practice won awards with projects Barmulloch Residents’ Centre (AJ Public Building of the Year 2018), and the City Observatory on Calton Hill, Edinburgh (RIBA Award 2019). Consequently, the practice was named Architect of the Year at the UK-wide 2018 AJ Awards.

Jude’ s expertise in strategic planning and engagement are seen in masterplans at Water Row in Govan, Glasgow and Granton Waterfront, Edinburgh. She sits on Glasgow’s Place Commission.

In parallel with her studio practice, Jude’s collaborated with writer Louise Welsh for the award-winning Empire Café during the 2014 Commonwealth Games. With Suzanne Ewing and Nicola McLachlan, Jude co-leads Voices of Experience borne from the 2016 Architecture Fringe. This collaborative project highlights the undiscovered, legendary women who made important contributions to architecture and the built environment.

In 2017, Jude with others, formed A New Chapter that spearheaded much needed reform within the RIAS. She is a Board member of the Glasgow Women’s Library, an external examiner at the University of Sheffield (2017-2020), a member of RIAS Council (GIA Rep) and sits on the RIBA Working Group ‘Architects for Change’. Scottish Women’s Awards named Jude ‘2018 Creative Industry Leader of the Year’ .
