SERVICE: Pre-Design Support for Housing

Add to Scrapbook

A&DS invites local authorities and housing associations who are planning to deliver housing to work with us at the very start of the process. We call the service Pre-Design. We want to ensure that placemaking is at the heart of local housing strategies.

Our objective is to support the quality of design in ongoing housing investment. The scope and quality needs to agreed by all parties from the outset. The overall purpose is to build the conditions for better design outcomes. We build on our experience of delivering design advice on housing on a range of scales.

Who is it for?

We work with Local Authorities and Housing Associations looking to deliver new housing. The project provides advice to Head of Service level on how to use visioning to commission better places using design. This pre-design advice targets the timescales between allocation in the Strategic Housing Investment Plan (SHIP) / Local Development Plan (LDP) and commissioning a design team.

How we can help

We can help to start an early dialogue to help set to set the quality agenda and bringing people together in workshops. Our role will be to broker a design-led, place-led approach. We will use our experience from Design Advice to help the visioning process. We will help set placemaking priorities and help agree what success looks like. This includes working on the place brief and facilitating the process.

“We now have an design protocol agreed between our Planning and Housing Services […] , regarding the development of our housing sites. This is a direct product of the event hosted by A&DS for which we express our gratitude.”
