Milne’s Primary School, Fochabers, Moray

Architecture and Design Scotland helped Milne’s Primary School imagine and explore a range of ways in which the existing school might be transformed, by carefully considering the spaces and opportunities for learning in and around the A-listed building.

At the core of the proposed approach the outdoor spaces were reimagined as a learning environment which supports the curriculum delivery needs of a 21st century school, enhances the opportunities for learning and allows new teaching methods to be applied.

The proposals weave together spaces that could be implemented incrementally over time and as they evolve and come into use can be responsive to the changing requirements and aspirations of the school and its wider community. Thought has also been given to the way in which external funding and parental investment could work in alignment with council investment over time.

A teaching resource accompanies the design proposals, with curriculum linked suggestions of how each of the new spaces could be used to support the identified learning outcomes and learner ambitions, both immediately and once the spaces are finished.
