Everyone at Architecture and Design Scotland was deeply saddened to learn of the need to demolish significant parts of the Glasgow School of Art to protect public safety against the building’s collapse. The news this week confirms our worst fears after two weeks of speculation and hope.
Safety is of course of the highest priority and we understand that this decision was inescapable due to the severe damage caused by the fire and the threat it poses to the neighbours of the school – businesses and residents alike.
The latest development raises questions as to “what next?” and we are keen to offer our support as the discussion on the next phases begins. In the meantime our hearts go out to all those both here and around the world who are affected by this devastating news, particularly those who have worked so hard over the last 4 years to restore the building.
