A&DS is sponsoring a screening of the seminal documentary ‘The City’, featuring live musical accompaniment by Auricle Ensemble.
Produced for New York’s 1939 World Fair, the film was written by Lewis Mumford with Aaron Copland’s accompanying score (which propelled him to Hollywood) described as “an astonishing missing link not only in the genesis of Copland’s Americana style but in American music and cinema” (LA Times). Actor Crawford Logan will narrate live alongside the twenty musicians directed by Chris Swaffer.
The evening concert will also feature the European premiere of the original quartet version of Copland’s ‘Quiet City’ (a manuscript that has languished forgotten for almost 70 years in the Library of Congress) and special commission, ‘Sprawl’, by Steve Forman. Interspersed throughout the concert will be contributions from some of Scotland’s most innovative architects, planners and social design experts, to put into context Mumford’s film and thinking, as well as to explain how his city planning inspiration not only came from Scotland, but in turn informs modern planning to this day.
