RMJM’s European studio has been awarded the contract to design Segment 3 of the United Terminal of Domodedovo Airport in Moscow.
It will be designed by RMJM’s studios in Edinburgh and Moscow and will increase the airports current capacity by 16.5 million passengers per year, with construction expected to be complete in 2017.
The third segment will be the same size as London Heathrow’s Terminal 5 building and will be 254,000 square metres, almost doubling the airports current size. The cost of the project construction is £262 million (12.9 bln. Rub).
Situated 26 miles southeast of the centre of Moscow, Domodedovo Airport is currently the largest airport in Russia and Eastern Europe in terms of passenger and cargo traffic and includes a railway station connecting it to Moscow city centre.
RMJM will now commence the recruitment of up to an additional 20 staff between Edinburgh and Moscow to carry out the design work over the next 18 months.
Other recent significant transport projects for the group includes the Kolkata airport, Metro Circle Line in Singapore and Hong Kong Admiralty Station. RMJM is currently designing one of three new metro lines and two interchange stations for a Mass Rapid Transit System in Hyderabad, India.
Charlie Barguirdjian, RMJM Design Director said: “Third segment will handle millions of passengers a year and our aim is to design a terminal that will greatly improve the passenger experience.”
