Extreme Den Building

Date: 24 May 11
Author: Samantha MacDonald

In March 2011 Hanneke Scott-Van Wel of Stone Opera facilitated a series of free primary school Extreme Den Building workshops in Glasgow, Ayrshire and Aberdeen schools as part of Architecture and Design Scotland's education programme.

Designed to introduce young people to architecture and placemaking in a fun and accessible way these workshops provided active, cross-curricular learning experiences encouraging development of the four capacities.

Students were introduced to architecture in general with an engaging and fun presentation about the built environment. In the discussion they were encouraged to voice their opinions about the examples shown and started to consider how theirs and others' opinions are formed.

They recognise, through debate and discussion, that elements of the built environment are designed for particular purposes and have significant impact upon the people and communities that use them.

After this initial discussion the students worked with Hanneke, a professional architect, in teams to design and build dens full scale with unusual materials. More urban than the usual den building activities, this workshop targeted sustainability issues along with Curriculum for Excellence outcomes across a number of subject areas involving design, problem solving, challenge, technology, team work and a bit of lateral thinking.

This was a great, physical, highly interactive workshop suitable for all abilities. A teacher resource pack, giving guidance, hints and curriculum outcomes is available to download if you would like to do something similar in your school.

Teacher comments:

"This was a very positive experience for all pupils."

"I enjoyed the whole workshop and watching the pupils in my class working together."
