As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic the 17th International Architecture Exhibition at La Biennale di Venezia will now take place from 22 May to 21 November 2021, rather than in 2020 as planned.

The Scotland + Venice partners has been preparing a presentation for the Biennale in partnership with Edinburgh based architecture and design practice 7N Architects.  The partners are currently reviewing its plans with further announcements to follow.

About WHAT IF?…/

What does the future of your place look like? What if you could change it?

It’s an open question that can stimulate discussion, debate, creative thinking, and positive change. In the face of a changing and uncertain climate, it is vital that conversation and participation are prioritised when we design our collective future.

What if…? / Scotland seeks to re-engage the civic role of design professions by asking citizens from across Scotland to share their hopes and dreams for the future of the places they call home.

At the start of 2020 7N paired people from all over Scotland – Wester Hailes in Edinburgh, Paisley in Renfrewshire, Annan in the Scottish Borders, Elgin in Morayshire, and Lerwick in Shetland – with designers, architects, and artists. Each individual presented a challenge to a designer. They shared a hope, dream or wish for the future of the place where they live. The designers used these prompts as starting points to explore imaginative solutions to the challenges facing the community.

This collaborative process has been captured in a series of short films forming the narrative focus of the exhibition. The stories of each place, as told by its citizens and set within the rich and varied landscapes of rural and urban Scotland, are presented in an immersive environment designed for reflection and response.

Responding to the theme of Biennale Architettura 2020’s theme How will we live together?, What if…? / Scotland encourages collaborative thinking, and demonstrates how community-led, grassroots engagement can stimulate local discussions which become global conversations.

How will we live together? What if…?
