Summary

The new building is essentially a hospital without beds. It is a major acute facility which can handle around 80% of the work of a general hospital without overnight accommodation. It will handle around 2000 patients per day in around 20 separate departments, including Day Surgery, Imaging, Endoscopy, Ophthalmology, Renal Dialysis, Gynaecology and Minor Injuries.

In design terms the challenge was to produce a building which could cope with 2000 patients, plus attendant carers, and 800 staff whilst providing a place of calm, where consultations can be held and healthcare delivered in an atmosphere conducive to healing.

The available site for the building is approached from the west, but has its main car park to the east. A generous daylit arcade has been driven through the building, linking two entrances and giving access to every department, resolving both access and wayfinding issues.

Waiting areas are provided with daylight and outlook to external courtyards, and are designed to be places for contemplation and preparation. To assist in this an ambitious arts programme has been evolved during the course of the design, with five artists working with the architects in order to establish the required atmosphere.

The building has been enthusiastically received by staff and public:
"It's a stunning hospital...There is no reason why patients shouldn't feel positive when they go there. It's not dark or dingy. It is lovely and light. All hospitals should be designed like the Stobhill site in the future" Margaret Watt, Scottish Patients Association on her visit to New Stobhill Hospital

The building has won many awards including being named the world's best health care building of its size in the Design & Health International Academy Awards.
