Stratheden Mental Health Unit scoops RIBA prize
Congratultions to NHS Fife and Richard Murphy Architects, whose mental health unit Muirview Ward at Stratheden Hospital was recently awarded a RIBA Scotland award.
The Judging Panel commented:
"This project is the result of close cooperation with client and nursing staff to produce a bright, contemporary environment designed to improve the wellbeing and state of mind of residents. Two single-storey pavilions set within garden grounds cater for individuals with neurodegenerative illness; these spaces incorporate eighteen bedrooms and twenty-four bedrooms respectively, all en suite, and enable both quiet contemplation and internal and external exercise. In both buildings, the rooms are arranged around garden courtyards with water features, and both take advantage of the views to open countryside. The unit creates comfortable, calming accommodation within a light and welcoming environment"
Dennis O'Keefe, Design Champion , NHS Fife said of the award
"This endorses the user-centred design approach that has been developed within NHS Fife and signifies the importance of pre-construction collaboration and design evaluation that adds value by generating staff, patient and visitor benefits."
