Case Study - Renfrew Health and Social Work Centre
This Project replaces an existing Health Centre within the Renfrew Community. The Centre incorporates three GP Practices, various NHS Services, and Social Work services. The building will be 5250m2, and will provide extra space not at present available for more services to be provided at community level. The centre uniquely combines services offered by both NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, and Renfrewshire Council.
The new development is based on Ferry Rd in Renfrew approximately 1 mile from the existing Health Centre, and a 2 minute walk from the present Social Work Office. Renfrew is experiencing a regeneration at the moment with additional housing being developed, along with the continued expansion of the riverfront and Braehead Shopping and Leisure Complex to which the new facility is on the main transport route from Renfrew Town Centre
The design has a bright, airy, and welcoming feel with the emphasis on trying to achieve a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. It is based around three rectilinear accommodation blocks connected by a glazed entrance and triple height glazed circulation route. Looking out over the newly created public square, the building's frontage has been designed to offer an appropriately welcoming and accessible face. Internally, the entrance and circulation space is effectively a continuation of the public square leading into the building, and has been envisaged as a "streetscape", featuring a triple height volume with glazed screens at either end of the building and rooflights above to flood the space with natural light.
The centre has received excellent feedback from the local community, which is clear from the following quote from Effie McGahie, President of the Renfrew Community Council ….. “We are highly delighted with the new centre. It’s beautiful – really modern and bright. In fact if you go in feeling unwell, you come out feeling better because it is just so nice inside! Having all the service together under one roof is a major benefit too.”
