Summary

A new build healthcare centre in Dunscore, a village in rural Dumfries and Galloway. The building replaces the existing facilities of the local GP Practice, whose premises were deemed no longer fit for purpose.

The new facility provides three consulting rooms (two of which are sized for VT training) and two treatment rooms, administrative, FM and staff spaces, a dispensary, operational bases for community nurses and storage rooms.

The structure is formed in timber frame with a closed panel warm roof construction. This allows accommodation to be formed on the upper floor whilst minimising the visual impact of the building.

The construction also allows space for future expansion within the roof, which means that the practice can continue to grow on the site without costly future works. Double height spaces have been formed in the waiting area and corridors. These are used alongside curtain walling and rooflights, to provide light and airy volumes, which enhances the user experience of the building.

Materials have been kept to a simple palette to reflect the context of the village. The mass of the building has been split in two by a strip of curtain walling which rises over the roof. This allows the building to deliver the required services, maximise daylight and natural ventilation and tie in closely with the village.

Heating is provided by a biomass boiler burning wood pellets. Lighting throughout the building is installed as LED to minimise electricity consumption and future maintenance. The facility aims to achieve BREEAM Excellent.
