Glasgow's Sporting History and Future 2014
This exhibition was created to share information around Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games 2014 and take stock of the architecture and places of its sporting heritage. A map was developed to show not only the venues, but also, with over 70% of the venues already in place, their history. The forthcoming Commonwealth Games are an important conduit to understanding Glasgow’s past and future, its previous events and festivals, and its present day sporting activity.
Architecture + Design Scotland worked with the sportsmen and sportswomen of Glasgow to explore the relationship of the Games to their city. Participants walked, cycled, ran and wheelchaired from their existing community venues and locations, to their proposed Commonwealth Games counterparts, documenting their thoughts and findings, and looking for their Commonground. The outcomes have resulted in a series of route maps and films.
Ultimately this exhibition was a celebration of Glasgow as a city and it’s sporting heritage and future. It touches upon some of the many buildings and places that sport has given us, highlighting how sport has contributed greatly to place making within the city. These, along with our numerous parks, give us a city landscape that is truly a place to play. We not only need to celebrate this, we also need to invest in Glasgow to ensure that it’s future beyond 2014 continues to be as rich as its past.
